"Joe Kanaka"

Hawaiians have a long history with the peoples of North America. Some believe that during the height of Polynesian exploration and migration - around the 13th century, voyaging chiefs explored the coast of North America possibly ranging from Peru to Alaska.
"Joe Kanaka" was the Hawaiian "Killroy." It was a name given to Hawaiian sailors by their linguistically challenged crewmates on the 19th century whaling ships that traversed the broad oceans in search of the huge animals whose oil provided the freshly industrialized nations with light, soap, and other new necessities.
Many of these men, like sailors form all other lands, found love in distant ports and settled at various points of call. Below is a story of one of those intrepid Hawaiians.
